Wipro creates tech exec & biz councils
BANGALORE IT major Wipro has formed a technology executive council (TEC) and a technology business council (TBC) to gear up for future waves of growth. Like many of its peers, Wipro is now looking to move away from a pure services-driven business model to one that involves developing platforms and products, including developing IP (intellectual property).
The company's newly appointed CTO, Anurag Srivastava, said that the focus of the company is now to differentiate from its peers through unique offerings. The services business is becoming commoditized. Even global IT companies have successfully copied the global delivery model first perfected by the Indian service providers, and there is now little that differentiates one from the other.
Wipro's TEC consists of about 50 technology leaders identified from across horizontal service lines and verticals. The TBC is a smaller council with around 18 members who work closely with customers in the field to bring insights from the client side. The TEC and TBC will together define the roadmap for future readiness of the company.
The council members are based in Wipro centres across the world and meet formally once a quarter. However, once in a fortnight they meet virtually. Srivastava said there was no plan to create a separate organization or company for this initiative . "We felt a loose structure is a good idea. This will help our services business, as also benefit from it." TOI had reported last month that Infosys was considering establishing a separate company to focus on platforms and products. This requires a greater risk-taking culture than in the services business.
Wipro, however, will increasingly work with startups and universities for this initiative. It is currently working with seven startups that have distinct business models. Srivastava declined to provide details of these. It has also just entered into an R&D partnership with Belgium-based IMEC for nano electronics. The company is also working with partners in areas such as robotics and low cost tablets. Wipro has identified cloud, mobility and analytics as its focus growth areas for the short term. Over the medium to long-term, the company sees the key growth drivers to be machine-to-machine cyber-physical integration (making objects talk to one another), web science (obtaining contextual information and acting on it), miniaturization and natural user interfaces (interfaces that come almost naturally to us, such as touch and motion, instead of having to learn it).
